Beta traces its roots to 1905, when it was founded in Florence, Italy, as Società Giuseppe Bianchi, a workshop building bicycles by hand. The Beta name itself comes from the initials of two of the men who ran the company, Bianchi and Tosi. The business moved into motorcycle production at the end of the 1940s as motorized transport took hold in postwar Italy, and by the 1970s had shifted its focus toward off-road machines as that segment grew in popularity. Beta's competition reputation was cemented by Spanish rider Jordi Tarrés, who won three consecutive Trial World Championships aboard Beta motorcycles in 1987, 1988, and 1989, part of a broader run of success that established the brand as a serious force in both trials and enduro racing. Beta remains an independent, family-connected Italian manufacturer today, with off-road trials and enduro motorcycles still forming the core of its identity.
