The BMW R 1200 GS is the motorcycle that made adventure touring mainstream. Launched in 2004 to replace the R 1150 GS, it was lighter and more powerful, combining a 1,170cc air- and oil-cooled boxer twin with shaft drive and BMW's Telelever front suspension.
In 2013 BMW introduced a water-cooled version with more power and modern electronics, including riding modes and semi-active suspension. The GS Adventure version added a larger fuel tank and more protection. It was replaced by the R 1250 GS in 2019. Rivals include the KTM 1290 Super Adventure and Honda Africa Twin.
