Brammo was founded in 2002 and became one of the earlier dedicated developers of electric-motorcycle technology in the United States, based in Ashland, Oregon. Its Enertia model, capable of over 60 mph with a range up to about 80 miles per charge, was followed by the more powerful Empulse line. Polaris Industries became a strategic investor in 2011, putting in $28 million and later a further $13 million as the companies collaborated on electric powertrain projects across motorcycles and off-road vehicles. In January 2015, Polaris acquired Brammo's electric-motorcycle business outright, while also backing a recapitalization that let the remaining Brammo entity refocus solely on designing and integrating electric vehicle powertrains rather than building complete motorcycles under its own name.
