Brough Superior was founded in 1919 in Nottingham, England, by George Brough, who built each motorcycle to individual customer order using components largely made in-house. A magazine tester dubbed the marque "the Rolls-Royce of Motorcycles," a label Brough was able to use with the blessing of Rolls-Royce itself after an executive toured the factory. Renowned for performance and quality rather than volume, the company built roughly 3,000 motorcycles over about two decades, including the SS100 and SS80, and counted T.E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) among its most famous owners. Production ended in 1940 as the factory turned to wartime work, and the original company never resumed motorcycle manufacturing. The name lay dormant for decades until a group of French enthusiasts and engineers acquired the rights and revived it, opening a dedicated factory in Toulouse, France, in 2015 to build modern, low-volume Brough Superior motorcycles that continue the brand's original emphasis on exclusivity and high performance.
