The Harley-Davidson XLH Sportster 1200 was the larger-engined Sportster of the Evolution era, introduced in 1988. It used a 1,200cc air-cooled V-twin in the classic Sportster chassis, offering much more torque than the 883.

It was popular with riders who wanted a compact, nimble Harley with more power. Later Sportster 1200s were renamed in the XL range in 2004, when the engine became rubber-mounted. Rivals included the Honda Shadow 1100 and Yamaha Virago 1100.
