Honda's Fireblade started in 1992 as the CBR900RR, a light, compact sportbike that beat heavier rivals by refusing to pile on mass. Tadao Baba's "light is right" brief defined the name, and the engine grew through 893cc, 918cc, 929cc and 954cc versions before the first true CBR1000RR arrived in 2004.
The 2004 bike was Honda's reply to the Yamaha R1 and Suzuki GSX-R1000: a 998cc inline-four in an aluminium twin-spar frame, with MotoGP-inspired styling. The 2008 generation was lighter and more compact, Honda added combined ABS as an option the following year, and the 2017 generation brought a full electronics package including traction control and riding modes.
In 2020 Honda raised the bar with the CBR1000RR-R Fireblade, a high-revving homologation machine with winglets and well over 200 hp, while the SP versions add semi-active Öhlins suspension and Brembo brakes. Across every generation the Fireblade has been Honda's flagship sportbike, competing with the Yamaha R1, Kawasaki ZX-10R, BMW S 1000 RR and Ducati Panigale V4.
