The Kawasaki GPZ 900 R is the original Ninja, launched in 1984 as the fastest production motorcycle of its day. It uses a liquid-cooled 908cc in-line four, Kawasaki's first liquid-cooled 16-valve road engine.
It set the template for modern sports bikes and became famous in the film Top Gun. It stayed on sale until the late 1990s in some markets. Rivals included the Honda VF1000R and Suzuki GSX-R1100.
