Lehman Trikes was founded in 1985 in Alberta, Canada, by John Lehman, who built the first Lehman Trike - a three-wheel conversion of a 1981 Honda CB900 - in his own garage so his wife and two young children could ride along with him. Lehman and business partner Larry Strilchuk grew the venture from that prototype into a 30,000-square-foot facility in Westlock, Alberta, and began converting Harley-Davidsons into trikes in 1991. The company went public on the TSX Venture Exchange in 2002 with around 100 employees, then shifted its operations to Spearfish, South Dakota starting in 2004, becoming fully US-based by 2008. Founder John Lehman died in 2012, after which the company changed hands and continued operating under new ownership.
