Voxan was founded in 1995 in Issoire, France, by Jacques Gardette with the aim of building France's first serious global motorcycle marque, centered on its own 996cc, 72-degree V-twin engine; a prototype appeared in 1997 and the first production model followed in 1999. The company struggled financially and entered compulsory liquidation in December 2009. Monaco-based Venturi acquired the Voxan brand in June 2010, and under Venturi president Gildo Pastor refocused it entirely on electric motorcycles. That shift produced the Wattman, the first electric motorcycle developed in Monaco, unveiled in 2013. A later high-performance version of the Wattman, ridden by Max Biaggi, broke 21 world speed records in October 2020, reaching 455.7 km/h (283.2 mph) to become the fastest electric motorcycle in the world.
