The MT-09 arrived in 2013 with Yamaha’s 847 cc CP3 triple - later 889 cc from 2021 - in a short, light naked chassis. It was the hooligan counterpart to the MT-07: more power, more wheelie, a higher spec fork after early complaints that the first bikes were under-damped.
2017 brought a slipper clutch and styling refresh. 2021 was the proper second generation: 889 cc, new frame, KYB suspension, six-axis IMU and a 14-litre tank. Seat height is about 825 mm; wet weight sits around 189–193 kg depending on SP and electronic-suspension versions. The SP gets better suspension; the standard bike is the volume seller.
This is not an A2 bike in full-power form. It sits between the MT-07 and litre nakeds such as the MT-10. Compare it with the Kawasaki Z900, Triumph Street Triple and Yamaha’s own XSR900, which uses the same triple in retro clothes. Use the year table for the 847-to-889 jump and for IMU-era rider aids.
