The Yamaha XJ 900 S is Yamaha's shaft-driven sports tourer built around an air-cooled in-line four. The XJ900 first appeared in the early 1980s, and its engine grew from 853cc to 891cc during its long production run.
With a frame-mounted fairing, comfortable riding position and low-maintenance shaft drive, it became a favourite with touring riders. The later XJ900S Diversion carried the same idea into the 1990s and 2000s.
