Yamaha’s R1 defined the modern litre sportbike in 1998: a 998 cc four with a compact chassis that made Honda’s then-CBR900RR look dated. Every generation since has been a racing homologation exercise as much as a street bike.
Key jumps: 2007’s Yamaha Chip Controlled Intake and a new Deltabox frame; 2009’s crossplane crank, which changed how the R1 delivered drive off corners; 2015’s M1-derived electronics, short-stroke engine and aluminium frame that still underpins current bikes. Later years added ride-by-wire refinements, aero and, on some markets, an R1M with Öhlins electronic suspension and carbon bodywork.
Claimed power on current bikes is in the 200 hp class. Seat height is around 855 mm - tall for a sportbike - and wet weight is in the high-190s to low-200 kg. The R1 is a track tool that can be ridden on the road, not the other way around. The R7 and MT-09 are the Yamaha answers for the street. Compare current years with the BMW S 1000 RR, Ducati Panigale V4 and Honda CBR1000RR-R.
