The modern R7 (2021– ) is not a successor to the 1999 OW-02 R7 homologation special. It is an MT-07 in a full fairing: 689 cc CP2 twin, steel frame, about 73 hp, 835 mm seat and roughly 188 kg wet.
Yamaha built it for riders who like R-series looks without R6 insurance or an 80 mm inseam. It sits in the same bracket as the Honda CBR650R and Kawasaki Ninja 650, with less peak power than the 650 four and more character than most parallel twins. Electronics are modest next to a current ZX-6R.
Changes since 2022 have been facelifts and new colours rather than new engines.
