CCM is a small, family-run English manufacturer based in Bolton, founded in 1971 by trials and scrambles rider Alan Clews. The company grew directly out of the collapse of BSA's competition department that year: Clews bought up the leftover parts and began building bikes himself, and the first CCM machines went into production in 1972 built around BSA's B50 engine in 499cc and 608cc form. In 1975 Clews bought an old textile mill on the edge of Bolton for £25,000, and CCM motorcycles are still handcrafted on that same site today. The company has stayed deliberately small-volume throughout its history, focused on lightweight off-road and adventure-oriented singles rather than competing on mass production. In 2021 CCM was bought by Bolton businessman Anil Pitalia through his Pitalia Capital investment firm, with the stated aim of growing the business while keeping the Clews family's original engineering philosophy intact.
