The Harley-Davidson XLH Sportster 883 Standard was the entry-level Sportster when the Evolution engine was introduced in 1986. Its 883cc air-cooled V-twin, simple design and low price made it a popular first Harley.
It came with minimal chrome and a basic finish, making it a common starting point for customisation. Later models added belt drive and five-speed gearboxes. It was replaced by the XL 883 models in 2004 when the Sportster gained a rubber-mounted engine. Rivals included the Honda Shadow 750 and Yamaha Virago 750.
